Some time ago I decided that I wanted to read some books related to science fiction in order to learn how to write a story. My first book in this journey was Farenheit 451 from Ray Bradbury. I also writed a bit 20240726 - How to write a book - My journy.
The book tells the story of Montag, a fireman in a world that firefighters are intended to create fires (instead of extingish them). In this universe, books are forbiden and they should be burned. Montag is part of a journey to discover this reason, and fight agains it.The character experience a existential crisis, and questioning things of his own life and the society. Why I like my job? Do I love my wife? Am I different? What is the purpose of burning books? How bad can a book be? It is common that the book enters in a dream, whitout mentioning it. Only some references about sleep, time or place, makes you to discover that Montag is inside a dream. Sometimes is difficult to know what is real, from what is not. But these questions are being reflected on these dreams. Some characters are being introduced in the story, the first is a teenager that is different from all her classmates that suddenly dissapers. The story changed drastically when Montag needs to go to burn a house full of books, with his coworkers, and he is not capable to do his job. That experience makes him to go against the current. Leaving his job, and finally leaving the society. At the end Montag discovers people similar to him, with the same objectives.
The book is long, and slow, but it can be simplified in the next way:
- Introduction of the world of Montag. Dark, grey, monotonous. It is presented by Montag and Clarisse. It starts questioning the society
- Montag goes to the house to burn books, and he is not capable to continue against his moral.
- The Capatain visit his house, and explains why books needs to be forbiden.
- Montag is forze to burn his books, and he burns a coworker. Then it starts hiding from the Hound.
- It finds a group of people that helps him to scape
It was a difficult read. I did it in english, and was very difficult to follow, specially during the dreams. I did not like a lot honestly, but is admirable the talent of the writer, and how is written. Then are some pages that could be a poem, there is a lot of work into it. I found repetitive the symbolism of the book, it showed as it is going to solve the world. Maybe too exagerated, I could not relate to it. I did lot like that there are some parts that are extremely slow, is like the writter was payed to write pages. But then there are some parts that there are a lot of things happening at the same time, and they go super fast.
Is difficult to give a grade because I have read that many books to say this book is good or bad. But it was an interesting topic.
