20240726 - How to write a book - My journy

Since some time ago I am interested in write my own book, or at least create my own universe. Here some thoughts that I will complete while I am doing my journy.

Some things before starting. I have not read that many books in my life, and I am starting to read in an anaylitical way. I want to discover how other authors write books. Specially science-fiction. I want to answer some questions like:

  • How do they image these worlds?
  • How do they write?
  • How do you create a character with its backstoryes and context?
  • How is the process of writting? Is something personal? Do you ask friends?
  • Is the inspiration comming from personal experiences or they are completly deatched from the author?

Imaginary worlds

From the Introduction of Fahrenheit 451, it explains a bit the process of the creation of the book.

A way to get inspiration for an imaginary world is going to be to answer questions like:

  • How it would be a world like….?
  • What consecuences would that have?
  • How would the people experience that new reality?

This new universes are false stories, the are not real. But even tho they explain a reality. The book of Fahrenheit 451 shows a world that firemen burn books. Even tho it is fictional story, it explains a reality of censorship, of false information. Although the universe is not real, it can shows a reality.

Examples Writting style

Fahrenheit 451

From this book I have the next conclusions:

  • It is a constant poem. The book is not only a story, is also what worlds are chose to describe that story. The worlds are measured carefully to guide you to some feelings. It feels like a long poem. Words are often difficult to understand, using a complex use of english.
  • The story is presented as you are in the head of the protagonist. It is a constant narrative of the thoughts.
  • There is no clear structure of each paragraph. I am used to show clearly one idea in each paragraph. But in this story is difficult to get a single idea from each paragraph. It feels that each paragraph is a moment in the head of the protagonist, rather than a single idea.
  • It is trying to describe every single detail of the scene. What are your feelings. What the character observe. What it the temperature. What do you feel when you entered in the room. How did you move. It is like experiencing a scene in slow motion when you are aware at 100% of all the details in your environment. It happens only when there is no action in the story.
  • I could differentiate two scenarios. One that is happening some action, is fast, a lot of things are happening. And other, that is slow, there no action. In the first one the book is focused in the dialogs and the actions. Is often that you are not sure about the space, about the time, or the thougts. There is no detail on this. However, in the scenario that is slow, the author is very focused in the space, the smells, how big small, the thoughts, the feelings, is suuuuper long, and suuuuuuper slow. It kinda feels that the author wants to put random words to make the book longer.
  • Sometimes for me is difficult to understand the space, it is not describe that much. And sometimes when the story change place, it is difficult to follow.
  • The book is written from the point of view of the main character, Montag. It is written in 3rd person and 1st person all the time. In the same paragraph it is written at the same time a description of the space in 3rd person, a description of the other characters in 3rd person, the thoughts of the character in 1st person.
  • In general the story feels vague as a dream. Like in a dream you would focus in the feelings, the smells, etc. And then in the spaces they are described vague, and maybe even inconsistent. It is difficult to know what is real or not.
  • The book as something very interesting. That it let you know that the main character is going to sleep. And before that the language is easy to understand, is a normal english. And then it starts writting in a difficult way, with a lot of comparisons, deep references, and a very poety english style. In this part the main characer is inside a dream, but it nevers tells you he is in a dream. Then it will reveal the real feelings and thoughts of the character, like he doesnt like the wife for example.
  • There are some importnat details of the main character that are revealed little by little. Like for example the fact that the main character is hidding some books. But it is not reveal til the mid of the story.
  • A dialog in the book is often written without who was talking, you need to guess because of the tone. An example of a dialog would be.
The night was cold, I was tired and alone. Then I found Clarise, with her white skin as the mediterrean sea in a warm morning of Agusut. "How are you Mr Montag. Dont you find beautiful this night." I laughted. "I found interesting the way the birds fly in this city."

On the other side of the street there was another....

The Martian

I made a summary in 20240823 - Book - The Martian. These are my notes related to the writting style:

  • The book is written as a diary. Witney, the main character, is writting a diary to documentate how is life in Mars. This diary would be the memories in case he die in his adventure, or even it would be the reference for NASA and humanity about how is heart. So in that sense is really detailed, and written kinda if it was it for a experiment. It is very objective, he doesnt write about emotions, feelings, life on earth, his past life, etc.
  • There are lot of moving forward in the story, using the “SOL” as a keyword. This is a day in mars planet. At the beginning of each part it is a reference about which SOL are we.
  • Apart from that it is common the references to past days.
  • Characters are well defined with there dialogs. It feels that the main character is witney becuase is sarcastic, it makes jokes, it laughts about other characters.
  • The story is not just Witney, some parts are written from Houston, when NASA is working on bringing Witney to earth. This part of the book is written as a narrative, with the conversations and the thoughts of the engineers.
  • During the parts in Housten is common that is changing the scene, this is showed with three dots in the page
  • When a new important achievement/part of the story is going to happen, there is a narrator explaining in a descriptive way the situation. It feels like a camera pointing exactly to what happened. For example when there was an accident, the narrator takes over the story and explains what happened, then Witney explained it with his own words, with the information he got in the situation.
  • It is common the use of acronyms
  • The chapter are used to divide part of the story. There are some cliff hangers.
  • During a big part of the book, Witney and NASA communicates using radio, with text messages. It makes the story more real, even using slang and acronims. These are written lik:
[08:19]JPL: A little behind schedule
[08:01]WATNEY: How is my care packaging comind along?

2001 A Space Odissey

I made a summary in 20241113 - Book - 2001 - A space Odissey. These are my notes related to the writting style:

  • The book is written from the point of view of a narrator. In 3rd person.
  • The story is happening at 3 different times, in 3 different places. Dividing the story in 3 parts.
