It seems that in the next months I am going to leave my job and I need a new computer. Also it might be that I will be able to buy a computer, but not in the short term. So I need to know what I want because there are some interesting possibilities.
To do this debate I am going to discuss about some things I really love and I would like to continue.
Things I love:
- Docks
- Small computer
- Long life battery
- Linux
- Programs
- Zettlr
- Vscode with compiler
- Launch virtual machines
- Ansible, terraform, python, basic linux things.
- From time to time I need Altium, Solidworks, some FPGA softwares.
- Syncthing
- i3wm
Things I hate:
- Dual boot and some resources in one, and some in others
- WSL1 and WLS2, they are good but terrible for long term
- OS that is half working
- The cloud for GUI
- Have my computer half full with software I dont use.
Possibility number one
- Super beefy machine with windows and linux. Expensive, but everything in the same place
Linux self hosted
- Use my mac for daily day
- Buy a small PC that is running linux 24/7 and run my services there
- Launch virtual machines in the Linux machines when I need to run solidwors, altium, etc.
Drawbacks:
- Remote + virtual machines sounds a bad idea
Cloud + PC [DISCARTED VERY BAD IDEA]
- Use my mac for daily day
- Buy a small PC that is running windows with the beefy softwares.
- Wake up on lan the PC with a linux computer connected.
